Kiri-e
Japanese cloth collage pictures
From the collection of Phyllis Rodin (1914-2015)
Student survivors (hibakusha 被爆者) of Hiroshima’s aftermath created these fabric collage works.
Kiri 切り, in Japanese, means ‘to cut’ and refers to the snipping of cloth, the pieces then separated by color to be then used as a palette to be applied with rice glue.
The final ‘-e‘ 絵 refers to the art pieces as ‘pictures.’
Usually, kiri-e 切り絵 in Japan is cut-paper-on-paper. Cut-cloth-on-paper, as seen in this collection, is much less often seen and is known as nuno-kiri-e. 布切り絵
Central Asian Film
The aim of this series is to view the Central Asian through a prism of selected films of five republics, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. This film series consists of two sets of films, the series developed and coordinated by Dr. Gulnara Abikeyeva, Director of the Center of Central Asian Cinematography.
These films are shown with the permission of OSI, screening free to the public, together with a presentation related to the film topic.
The cover art for the feature film set showing a compelling image of hands-as-film focusing on an eye, was created by Ilya Rudoplavov, (photo credit Gulnara Abikeyeva).
